New System Helps EMC's Bottom Line
A late buying binge for its new high-end storage system pushed EMC Corp. into the black last quarter. EMC posted first-quarter net income of $35 million compared with a $77 million loss a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter rose 6% to $1.4 billion from a year earlier.
EMC didn't begin to ship its Symmetrix DMX system, built on a matrix networked architecture, until the middle of the quarter. Financial analyst Shebly Seyrafi at A.G. Edwards & Sons sees EMC picking up an additional penny of profit per share in the current quarter, thanks to a "more meaningful DMX ramp."
