New Tablet PC Supports 3G, Wi-Fi And Bluetooth

Besides Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, the new Itronix Tablet PC also has built-in support for cellular data.

Tablet PC vendor Itronix Tuesday unveiled a ruggedized device that comes with three types of wireless communications built-in and can optionally handle a fourth.

The company said that its Duo-Touch Tablet PC comes with built in support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Cingular's EDGE cellular data networks. The company said the device also will support 1xEV-DO 3G networks starting in July. In addition, a GPS system is optional for the device, the company said in a statement.

In addition, the system works with software that provides seamless handoffs among the various types of networks, an Itronix spokeswoman said. That software is from NetMotion and requires an extra-cost subscription.

The device follows a small but growing trend of building support for cellular data into mobile devices. Sony, for instance, recently rolled out a device with built-in EDGE support.

According to a spokeswoman for Itronix, the device is aimed at a variety of niche markets, including workers for utility companies and field-based insurance personnel such as adjustors. It comes with 1.2GB of RAM and is based on the Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition platform. Its ruggedized features include a magnesium case and an optional hard-drive heater that enables cold starts in temperatures as low as -20 Celsius.

The device will be available in June and will cost $3195.
