Nortel To Acquire Maker Of Call Processing Software

In an effort to unify call centers with the Internet, switch maker Nortel Networks unveiled plans today to acquire interactive call processing software and professional services vendor Periphonics Corp. for $436 million.

Nortel plans to integrate existing Periphonics call center applications with its widely used Windows NT-based call center switches and to jointly develop software packages that take advantage of the Web to create unspecified E-services.

Nortel had resold call center processing applications from VoiceTek, which was acquired by rival Aspect Telecommunications Corp. That prevented Nortel from undertaking the switch-applications integration it has sought.

Periphonics will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Nortel, with its headquarters remaining in Bohemia, N.Y. CEO Peter Cohen will continue to lead the company.
