Novell, 3Com Ramp Up Small-Business Offerings

Novell and 3Com Corp. this week will beef up their networking product and service offerings for small businesses.

Novell is launching the Novell Small Business Suite 5.1, for companies with up to 50 users. The product features the functionality of NetWare 5.1 to create an IP network environment, and it offers applications such as the NetWare Management Portal and Novell Directory Services E-directory. The suite also includes the GroupWise 5.5 collaboration and E-mail tool.

David Hunt, senior product manager of the Novell Small Business Suite, says the latest version is easier to install, configure, administer, and maintain than its predecessor. "It can be installed via a standard installation process where users are asked about seven questions, or users can choose an advanced installation. And it has tools that allow administrators to add and take away users very quickly," he says.

Starting at $4,400 for 50 users, the new Small Business Suite also includes products and services from Novell's partners, including Oracle 8i, IBM WebSphere, Tobit Faxware, and Network Associates VirusScan and NetShield. It also comes with the BorderManager 3.5 Firewall, which lets users deploy firewall, authentication, and virtual private network services based on NetWare 5.1. It's available now.

3Com is rolling out new OfficeConnect networking products and services that the company says will help online business applications run faster. They're also designed to protect core business information and simplify the management of network connections. The new product offerings include the IDSL Internet access device and an OfficeConnect Dual 56K LAN Modem, built to let users dial out to two locations simultaneously. 3Com is also offering new online courses designed to introduce networking strategies to small organizations.

3Com's OfficeConnect Dual 56-Kbps modem and OfficeConnect IDSL LAN modem, which are shipping immediately, are priced at $449 and $499, respectively.
