Novell unveiled new technology today that uses Novell Directory Services to manage network hardware. It also added Cisco Systems to the list of companies that support NDS.
The new Novell technology, demonstrated at the Comdex/Fall trade show in Las Vegas, is a Java agent that communicates between routers and switches, and NDS. This makes it possible for NDS to act as the repository of information needed to configure, reconfigure, or troubleshoot these devices, and lets NDS act as the central data store for setting policies regarding the allocation of network bandwidth.
Such "policy-based networking" has become a major goal of network hardware vendors. Cisco, a proponent of policy-based networking, agreed today to provide interoperability between NDS and its policy- and network-management software.
Novell previously struck NDS support deals with Lucent Technologies and Nortel Networks Inc.
