Online Shoppers Set Records

The busiest day for online Santas last year was Dec. 13, but sales in 2000 are expected to grow through the week, dwarfing all records set in 1999, according to data released Friday.

Online shoppers this year rang up a total tab of $247,675,446 for the 2,158,423 orders they placed on Dec. 13--an all-time record, and up a full 10% from the previous day. While the final figures for Dec. 14 aren't yet in, a growth rate that high indicates that sales likely had not yet peaked and will continue to grow through the week, BizRate predicts. Last year's record, set on Dec. 13, was $177.8 million in sales.

The BizRate data also shows that the average size of online purchases is continuing to rise, from $109 on Dec. 12 to $115 on Dec 13. Fifty-six percent of those sales came from women, and 9% came from first-time online shoppers.

More than 3 million bargain hunters visited online auction sites during the first week of December, a 62.3% increase over 1999, according to a Media Metrix report. Most of those online shoppers clicked on to, which had 2.6 million average daily unique visitors for the week ending Dec. 3--61.6% more than top retail site, which had 1.6 million.
