OpenOffice.org 2.0 Rolls Out Release Candidate

OpenOffice.org 2.0, a leading open-source rival to Microsoft Office and the foundation for Sun Microsystems' commercial StarOffice suite, enters a round of last-minute bug-checking as a candidate for final release.

OpenOffice.org 2.0, the free, open-source rival of Microsoft Office, came another step closer to final Thursday as Release Candidate 1 of the code was offered up to users and testers.

The free suite, whose code forms the base of the just-released StarOffice 8 from Sun Microsystems, has been in various forms of testing for more than a year, but Release Code 1 (RC1) is a sign that the final is not far off.

"Now is the time to test the RC, and we urge all to download it, test it, and file issues with the QA project on what you discover," the organization said on its Web site.

OpenOffice.org 2.0 features a redesigned interface and includes a database application. More information about the edition's toolset can be found on the group's Web site.

RC1 of OpenOffice.org 2.0 can be downloaded for Windows, Linux, and Solaris from various mirror sites around the world. The Windows edition is a 76MB download.
