PatchLink.com Joins MSP Market

PatchLink.com Corp. has thrown its hat into the increasingly crowded management service provider market with the introduction of its eManagement networking monitoring and management services.

The MSP market is the next logical step in the progression of PatchLink.com's network management applications, says Sean Moshir, the company's president and CEO. PatchLink.com's existing WebConsole application must be installed on a client's server, while eManagement Services consists of Web-based update, monitoring, and help-desk applications hosted by PatchLink.com.

PatchLink Update requires the installation of a software agent on each desktop and server that regularly receives software patches, fixes, and upgrades; the monitoring and help-desk applications work through a Web browser without the installation of additional software.

Distinguishing characteristics among MSPs are becoming harder to spot, says Corey Ferengul, Meta Group's program director of service-management strategies. One distinction between PatchLink.com and its competitors is that PatchLink.com provides its customers with the tools to check their desktops and servers, whereas other MSPs such as Nuclio Corp. and MimEcom Corp. take over the process entirely. A second point of distinction, Ferengul notes, is that, because PatchLink.com uses its own monitoring and management applications, the company's success will be based on the effectiveness of its technology, not just services delivery.

E-Management Services are available at basic and premium levels. Basic-level subscribers can access PatchLink.com's archive of patches and fixes free. Premium-level customers pay $49.95 per server agent per month and $2.95 per workstation per month for the update service, $10 per Web site per month for the monitoring service, and $12.95 per network administrator per month for the help-desk service. The update, monitor, and help-desk applications are also available as software packages hosted at the customer's site. Licenses for the software are priced at $600 per server and $40 per workstation for the update application, $75 per month for the monitor application, and $120 per administrator account for the help-desk application.
