Rule No. 1 in E-commerce: If you can't lead the market, at least keep pace. With that in mind, PeopleSoft Inc. and RateXchange Inc. separately revealed an expanded partnership and additional services.
PeopleSoft expanded its partnership with Commerce One Inc., saying they will jointly offer software and services for building online trading exchanges. It's PeopleSoft's first move into the torrid business-to-business E-commerce software market. PeopleSoft will use Commerce One's MarketSite B-to-B E-commerce platform as the front end of its eTrading Exchanges software and services, due out in May. PeopleSoft will integrate eTrading Exchanges with its supply-chain, accounting, and human-resource applications, as well as its consulting services.
PeopleSoft and Commerce One are building an online marketplace for the apparel industry with designer-jeans maker Guess Inc.
For its part, RateXchange, a business-to-business E-commerce exchange for telecom commodities, is adding auction and additional exchange capabilities. RateXchange plans to use the Ariba B2B Commerce platform to create a multibuyer, multiseller marketplace for bandwidth allocation between carrier-class telcos. Companies will be able to bid on the use of unused, or "dark," optical fiber and large blocks of standard telephony.
Insiders sniffed at the news. Joshua Greenbaum, principal of Enterprise Applications Consulting, says PeopleSoft's offering differs little from that of competitors SAP, Oracle, and I2 Technologies.
