RealNetworks Upgrades Helix To Support Wireless Networks

Helix Server now provides tools for streaming audio and video to mobile devices, including those that support Windows Media.

RealNetworks Inc. on Wednesday launched an upgrade of is Helix Server that provides tools for streaming audio and video to mobile devices.

The Helix Server Unlimited can stream content to wired devices supporting RealAudio, RealVideo, Windows Media and QuickTime platforms. In addition the upgrade supports the Mpeg-4 file format.

New features in the upgrade include support for 3GPP standards for high-speed wireless networks, and support for next generation protocols, such as IP v6.

Helix customers include the City of Seattle and Virginia Tech, the company said.

Seattle-based RealNetworks is best known among consumers for its online music subscription services and its software for playing audio and video distributed over the Web.
