Report: Solid-State Drives To Challenge Hard Drives

In-Stat projects that 50% of mobile PCs will sport solid-state drives by 2013, and that the drives may possibly replace hard disk drives as the preferred storage medium in laptop computers within 10 years.

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Hard disk drives may face legitimate competition in the mobile computer mass storage market from flash-based solid state drives (SSD), particularly in laptop computers, according to a study by market research firm In-Stat.

In-Stat projects solid state drives to reside in 50 percent of mobile computers by 2013, and possibly replace hard disk drives as the preferred storage medium in laptop computers within ten years.

"The HDD industry has done a phenomenal job of driving areal densities; however, it is clear that there are user segments for which drive capacities far exceed the user's need," said Frank Dickson, In-Stat analyst. "When one examines the declining cost trends for flash, the user's need for storage and the premium that consumers place on the benefits provided by SSDs, it is easy to see that there will be a clear demand for SSDs."

The firm added that a consumer survey found two-thirds of respondents to be comfortable with paying extra for SSDs in mobile computers. The survey added respondents believe power savings is the most important aspect of flash drives.
