Review: Extend Your Laptop's Horizons

You love your laptop, but there are times when you just can't compromise on screen size. With Matrox Graphics' DualHead2Go module, you don't have to. The palm-size box lets you snatch the video from your notebook's external monitor output and create panoramas as large as 2,560-by-1,024 pixels spread across multiple computer screens.

With all this visual real estate, you can create expansive work screens or partition space for separate tasks.

DualHead2GoThe $169 module must be compatible with your graphics subsystem in order for it to be able to interpret the data it needs to create a custom resolution for multiple displays. Check on compatibility at Matrox's Web site. Assuming that's a go, installation is a breeze. After installing the drivers, just connect your notebook to one side of the DualHead2Go box and then attach your monitors to the other side. Be sure to switch your notebook into external display mode.

The resulting 2,560-by-1,024 view is impressive, but you may be annoyed, as I was, by the visual distraction of your monitors' bezels, that strip of real estate that surrounds the outside of the panel. Play a DVD to take advantage of your new wide-screen capabilities and you could end up with the tip of an actor's nose showing up 2 inches way from his face, with the bezel interposing itself between the otherwise contiguous body parts. It's not intolerable, but it isn't pretty either.

There are other ways to use DualHead2Go. You can clone what appears on your portable's display onto each external monitor, producing three views of the original, handy for giving presentations. Or you can keep your workspace on one of the external displays and use the second as a task area for pop-ups or another app, making the DualHead2Go one of the more resourceful ways I've seen to solve the problem of a cramped display area.
