SAP Pitches Government Suite

Just three months after hiring retired Air Force Maj. Gen. John Barry, SAP this week will unveil a Defense and Security software suite, one of several announcements at SAP's annual conference. The company also will roll out new functions for its customer-relationship-management software that were developed with a consumer packaged-goods company, plus an application suite for logistics service providers. Expect SAP also to talk up its NetWeaver technology, the application backbone disclosed in January 2003 that lets companies use Web services to add functions and integrate with non-SAP systems more easily. "We already have hundreds of customers using some parts of NetWeaver," says Bill McDermott, CEO and president of SAP's Americas division, "and we expect that to be into the thousands."
