Senate Passes E-Government Bill

Provisions of the bill include establishing an online directory of federal Web sites and improvements in the recruitment and training of IT professionals.



The Senate late Thursday passed a bill establishing an Office of Electronic Government, which will be headed by a Senate-confirmed administrator within the Office of Management and Budget. The measure now goes to the House.

The legislation, known as the Electronic Government Act, also would:

  • Authorize $345 million over four years for a fund to support interagency E-government projects.
  • Establish an online directory of federal Web sites.
  • Require federal courts to post opinions online.
  • Improve recruitment and training of IT professionals.
"It's time the government take full advantage of the Internet and other information technologies to maximize efficiency and provide the public with seamless, secure, online information and services," bill cosponsor and Senate Governmental Affairs Committee chairman Joseph Lieberman said in a statement.
