UPS Gets Energy Efficiency Boost

Uninterruptible power supply systems from APC target energy efficiencies in network closets and server rooms.

Uninterruptible power supply systems (UPS) aren't necessarily the first place to look for energy savings, but new UPS models from APC are designed to do just that.

The new UPS models, announced Wednesday, come with diagnostic capabilities that can lead to energy efficiencies in network closets and server rooms.

Part of the APC Smart-UPS family, the models provide a new interface for local and remote configuration. Users can monitor and control energy usage and may receive notifications for recommended battery replacement dates. The customizable LCD interfaces display diagnostics, power status information, tests, and activity logs.

"In these difficult times, users need exceptionally high efficiency in order to optimize IT assets and reduce operating costs," said Dave Johnson, APC's senior vice president, Home and Business Networks, in a statement. "In addition, they require advanced monitoring and diagnosis capabilities to prepare and react in near real-time. These advanced models will once again raise the bar for server class UPS systems."

With new "green mode" capabilities, the models provide switched outlet groups for non-critical load shedding, sequenced start-up and shutdown phases as well as the capability to reboot single or multiple devices independent of the UPS.

The new Smart-UPS models are available in both standard and 2U rack tower convertible extended-run forms, the company said, noting also that the flexible form factors provide versatility for in or out rack operation while also making standardization easy.

Unified computing platforms promise to consolidate everything and anything into a single chassis. Find out about that and more in Network Computing's second all-digital issue. Download the issue here (registration required).
