The individual is society...
I liked this article but reject the premise that individual (dare I say "customized") education hurts students or society at large in any way. In the article "Helping students learn what they don't already know" (www.davidsongifted.org/db/Articles_id_10029.aspx) I realized that "batch processing" teaches to the lowest common denominator while boring the hades out of even moderately gifted students. We really need to understand that each student brings with them to the classroom a diverse set of knowledge and learning.
A little 6 year old little girl who just finished "Moby Dick" by Melville, has 7th grade comprehension is learning, in first grade, "sight words" with her classmates. (words like "an", "ask", "fly", "let", "live" etc).
Come on people! This is batch processing at its worst. Who are we serving by holding back our most gifted and talented? Individualized learning needs to happen for us to enter a new rennaissance.
