IBM spokesman John Reilly would not specify the number of cuts, but he said they amount to a half-percent of the 38,000 employees in the software division.
The affected employees, who are in more than 20 IBM locations around the United States, were notified Wednesday and Thursday, he said. They will be allowed to seek work elsewhere in the company, he said.
Armonk-based IBM took a similar action in the software group in September, cutting 400 jobs, mainly marketing and adminstrative positions.
IBM employs more than 315,000 people overall.
