IBM, MySQL To Bring Open Source Database To System i

The companies have agreed to work together in offering the MySQL Server for i5/OS, the flagship operating system for System i, and to certify IBM's DB2 as a MySQL storage engine.

IBM and MySQL AB have agreed to work together in developing the MySQL open-source database for IBM's System i business computing system.

The companies said Wednesday they planned to offer the MySQL Server for i5/OS, the flagship operating system for System i, and to also deliver IBM's database DB2 as a certified MySQL storage engine on the System i platform. DB2 would plug into the MySQL server and provide storage management, transaction support, and database management.

By combining the software, System i customers will be able to implement online and transactional MySQL applications while storing all data in DB2, where it can be shared with other applications.

In addition, MySQL Enterprise subscriptions, which include the MySQL database software, services and support, would be made available to IBM clients through the company's reseller network and System i sales team. IBM also becomes a member of the MySQL Certified Storage Engine Program.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
