IBM Opens Up DB2 Content Manager

Project Cinnamon incorporates XML, Web services into content management.

IBM on Monday provided a glimpse of a more open future as it unveiled plans to include XML, Web services support, and JSR 170 into the next version of its DB2 Content Manager.

Called Project Cinnamon, the next-generation product is being developed at IBM's Silicon Valley Labs, and features graphical XML schema mapping at the administrative level that simplifies exporting items from one content management system to another.

The next release of DB2 Content Manager, containing Project Cinnamon enhancements, will be released in about six months, according to IBM. The goal of Project Cinnamon is to simplify the process of setting up a content management system and make it easier to make changes to XML document definitions once the system is operational.

As part of the technology demonstration, IBM also revealed a new graphical builder for delivering workflow based on the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) standard. Web services support has also been improved; the Content Manager will be able to receive transaction requests in SOAP, which will help simplify development, according to IBM. Support for JSR 170 is also forthcoming, which will simplify the process of connecting business applications to content management systems.
