In Brief

High-level intelligence at a glance

In this Issue:

Tom Siebel Steps Aside
Retaining his role as chairman, Tom Siebel relinquished the CEO spot to Michael Lawrie. Lawrie was most recently a senior VP at IBM and leaves a 26-year career there.

Predictive Model Interface Expands
SAS and IBM have delivered production software that implements an extended version of the Predictive Model Markup Language (PMML) 2.1 standard, helping SAS lead among analytic solutions in terms of the variety of data mining algorithms accessible through its Enterprise Miner graphical interface. PMML 2.1 lets you rapidly integrate new predictive and descriptive models in operational systems without manual interference. PMML model exchange is available in the current release of SAS Enterprise Miner data mining workbench in combination with IBM's Intelligent Miner Scoring, an optional feature of IBM DB2 Universal Database v.8.1.

Where Everybody Knows Your Domain
What if your work-related Internet searches could be more successful? New search engines such as GlobalSpec's "The Engineering Web" tool are cropping up that limit searches to professional or industry domains, keeping away the clutter. Even better, these domain-specific search engines include part of the "hidden Web" - content that engines like Google can't index.

Web Services Choreography Advances
The World Wide Web Consortium has published its first public working draft of the Web Services Choreography Description Language (WS-CDL) 1.0.

Choreography provides the set of rules that explains how different components involved in a transaction may act together, and in what sequence. WS-CDL is a necessary complement to end point languages such as BPEL (Business Process Execution Language) and Java, providing them with the global model they need to ensure that the "rules of engagement" are consistently upheld across cooperating services.

Grid Computing Consortium Forms
The Enterprise Grid Alliance (EGA) is a new consortium formed to develop enterprise grid solutions and accelerate the deployment of grid computing in enterprises. The EGA is open, independent, and vendor neutral. For more, see http://www.gridalliance.org.
