Microsoft Gets Closer To Hyperion BI

The high-tech industry is no stranger to cooperation among competitors. Among the latest example is the latest partnership between Microsoft and Hyperion Solutions. Despite plans to acquire business intelligence vendor ProClarity, Microsoft is teaming up with Hyperion to integrate its System 9 BI+ suite with Microsoft's SQL Server 2006 reporting, analysis and integration services.

The idea is to give each other's customers more options for filling their BI tool chest. For Hyperion customers, the deal could make SQL Server more attractive as a database. For Microsoft customers, they can get seamless access to Hyperion's Essbase Analytics.

It's unlikely this partnership would have any impact on ProClarity. Microsoft is buying the vendor in order to get a quality front-end for its SQL Server Analysis Services. Hyperion brings a lot more than that to the table.
