re: More BI Packages Add Collaboration: Who Needs It?
As you've noted, the market for SharePoint (and SharePoint apps) is huge. Tibco has made a wise move by offering Spotfire within the context of its own platform (similar to a standalone application) and ALSO integrating with Microsoft SharePoint.
In terms of social computing and collaborative BI, SharePoint is also poised to remain strong in the long run. While it's true "SharePoint isn't going to easily operate as a social platform for most companies without help from other software," that doesn't mean SharePoint will be easily replaced. Instead, the compatibility of SP2010 with software from other vendors is a strength. SharePoint is a platform to build and deploy apps on top of. That means the underlying platform is flexible and can support BI and social apps that are popular today while remaining malleable as tastes change. Right now collaborative BI is a hot trend. But, like other trends, it won't last forever. Business practices will shift to new trends in the future. When they do, there will undoubtedly be SharePoint-compatible software developed to serve these future needs.
