Japanese telecommunications giant NTT is the latest Asia-Pacific vendor to throw its support behind Open Source Development Labs.

On Tuesday, Beaverton, Ore.-based OSDL announced that NTT has signed on as a member and will participate in the group's Data Center Linux and Carrier Grade Linux initiatives.

On Jan. 30, OSDL--employer of Linux kernel creator and lead developer Linus Torvalds--announced its first Chinese member, the Beijing Co-Create Open Source Software Company, which intends to focus on Linux kernel development and the promotion of the Linux desktop in China.

Another major Japanese firm, NEC Soft, also announced its formal backing for the open-source development organization on Jan. 28.

And late last year, NTT's lead systems integrator and Linux development expert in Japan, NTT Comware, joined the OSDL's Carrier Grade Linux and Data Center Linux working group initiatives.
