Agreed. 8.1 does a much better job showing users how to handle the unfamiliar interface. The hints are a bit ostentatious, which can be annoying if you've already learned how the OS works, but it's certainly preferable to Microsoft's earlier strategy-- which was basically to throw desktop users into the deep end of the pool and tell them to swim. As I've said before, I was surprised that Windows 8.1 didn't silence more of the discontent from longtime desktop users. Maybe this update, in combination with the promised fleet of cheap devices that will come alongside it, will help Microsoft to gain market share.
