SIS Releases Java-Based RFID Reader

Java Mustang permits the deployment of RFID middleware to the reader, reducing server load and minimizing network congestion.
SIS Technologies has announced the Java Mustang, a Java-based intelligent RFID reader that manages RFID tags and sensors at the edge of the network.

Based on the Linux operating system and 1.4 Java 2 Standard Edition, the Java Mustang provides secure, remotely manageable and multi-protocol RFID functionality. The standards-based software permits the deployment of RFID middleware to the reader, reducing server load and minimizing network congestion.

According to SIS chief operating officer John Reed, this functionality will enable simpler and more flexible RFID implementations and lower costs. "The Java Mustang shrinks the server architecture required for RFID deployments and allows computing to take place at the point of read/write," Reed said in a statement.

RFID middleware developer Cougaar Software has announced that it is developing an interface to the Java Mustang for its product, and SIS is currently putting the polish on Java Mustang OSes for Solaris and Windows XP. "We can't ignore the XP market for readers and middleware," noted SIS chief strategy officer Jessica Bray in a statement.
