Re: why a separate app?
LinkedIn is doing it too with its many new apps, each with a particular focus. LinkedIn has said in the past that it does this to offer more value for people who use one particular feature more than the others. Same with Facebook -- if you're a heavy Groups user, the new app is a lot better than the function within its flagship app.

Re: why a separate app?
Everytime I turn around, new apps are turning up. I feel like its my duty to remain abreast of everything new, even if I don't utilize all of them. There are so many growing trends, that it is hard to keep up with them all! I try my best though, because I feel like its good to "be current."

why a separate app?
I am missing why you need a separate app to improve FB Groups functionality.
