Facebook learned -- and other companies that gather user data (which is just about everyone these days) should learn too -- that just because you're 'allowed' to use this information, according to your complicated ToS doesn't mean you should. Transparency IS important to users. Facebook can argue its service is free and, therefore, it can do as it wishes with the data it gathers. I'd argue Facebook earns money on increasingly targeted ads and, therefore, it's already making money (which is fine) without guinea-pigging members, without their explicit knowledge and consent.
