Quote Of The Day:
"With the number of organizations in this country that are still using Windows 2000, it's a dereliction of Microsoft's duty to its customers not to put out a patch for the time-zone issue." - Paul Chinnery, Michigan hospital network administrator
Editor's Note: It's Getting Warm In Here
At the risk of putting a damper on what could be a blissful weekend of holiday shopping, today's special weekend edition features an analysis of the tough choices facing Windows 2000 users as Microsoft manages the transition to Vista and its life-cycle policies increasingly put pressure on 2000 users to upgrade.
In the case of Windows 2000, "mainstream support," through which it still can add new features, ended roughly 18 months ago. Increasingly, new applications won't work with 2000.
Contributor Brian Livingston analyzes the tough choices some companies face, and details how the lack of a patch for new time-zone definitions is hurting a hospital. He also contrasts Microsoft's approach with the more-liberal support life cycles that Sun provides for its Solaris OS.
If this issue is causing major problems for your organization, sound off at my blog entry. Or if it's no big deal, please share that opinion as well.
