Sterling Commerce Ramps Up Remote System-Mgm't App

Sterling Commerce Inc. unveiled a new version of its remote system- management software yesterday that features extended inventory and application-management capabilities to help IT organizations administer content on mobile users' notebooks without increasing bandwidth requirements exponentially.

Connect:Manage 2.0 comes packaged with two new software modules for asset and application management. The Inventory Manager component checks PCs for hardware and software assets and then deposits the data in a central database. When used in conjunction with Connect:Manage's existing Software Manager, Inventory Manager supports rules-based software distribution. Application Manager executes and tracks third-party software such as Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes. The module keeps these apps in sync with the server so users don't have to contend with replication.

Built on top of Sterling Commerce's existing architecture, the latest version of Connect:Manage uses bandwidth-management technologies such as data compression and caching to cut the amount of management data transmitted, and to reduce connection times. Connect:Manage starts at $5,000 for the server software, $50 per client. The software is available this month.
