Valid points, and no reason to wait
I think you make good points Dave, and I like the analogy about Flash that an official standards blessing may not be necessary for widespread use of WebRTC. The possible uses of WebRTC are much more widespread than just customer service applications, and this fact will help drive the adoption of the standard in my opinion regardless of the codec wars.
Even if the underlying technology is similar to existing applications like Skype or Facetime, the browser based ease of use and development opens up some cool applications that consumers will want. That consumer (and B2B) driven demand for use of WebRTC is what will force all browsers to support it eventually even if some of them get dragged along kicking and screaming.
