Storage Technology Works With CommVault To Protect Customer Data

Under a deal to be signed Monday, the companies will work together on a StorageTek version of CommVault's QiNetix Quick Recovery software.

Data recovery is never as easy as some vendors try to paint it. No one source can ensure the recovery of data, so partnerships are a must.

Storage Technology Corp., which knows as much about backup and recovery as any other vendor because of its high-end tape library prowess and decades of recovery services, will sign a deal with CommVault Systems Inc. on Monday to improve its capabilities. Under the agreement, the vendors will work together on a StorageTek version of CommVault's QiNetix Quick Recovery software.

StorageTek hopes to offer customers instant recovery of their most important data. The vendor chose CommVault because of deep application integration and the management framework that goes along with Quick Recovery, which keeps data available all the time, reducing the need for tired-out backup and recovery.

One industry analyst thinks StorageTek could go in a lot of directions with Quick Recovery, which he classifies in the replication space. "The key part of business-continuity processes is the recovery, not backup anymore," says Anders Lofgren at Forrester Research. "There's increasing emphasis on quick recovery among CIOs."
