Re: Amazon Robotics: IoT In The Warehouse
How cool is this? The more I read, the more I envisioned something not unlike what a futurisitic warehouse floor might have looked like in an 80s or 90s sci-fi movie. The robots uniformly scuttling past one another, having friendly nicknames given to them by the workers, and going on charge breaks like we go on coffee breaks (actually, they get more frequent breaks than I do!). It's all there - you can almost hear them bleeping in response to questions like a Star Wars R2 unit (maybe we'll get there soon). If it works for Amazon at that scale, then there's no doubt it's a viable model. A little sad Mr. Durham didn't go more into the financials though - how long does one robot stay in service, what do maintenance costs look like, what costs were involved in the transition. etc? These questions might matter more for other retailers than they do for Amazon.
