Cloud computing is essential here
This post provides a good example of using cloud computing for sciencetific project. In such kind of mission-critical and computing/data intensive scenario, using cloud is a natural choice. Especially the key to success is the ability to do efficient analysis for data in motion - the active stream of data collected.
