Oracle has scheduled a 5-hour webcast for Wed., Jan. 27, to roll out its strategy for the new systems business it will launch following its acquisition of Sun. Oracle's calling the event, "Transforming the Way You Buy, Run, and Manage Your Business Systems."Oracle's announcement made no mention of the still-missing EU approval for the deal, which has cost thousands of Sun employees their jobs and Oracle several hundred million dollars. And I think the omission is perfectly fitting.

Saying the new combination will "transform the IT industry," an announcement on Oracle's website offers this glimpse into what will be discussed:

Only Oracle + Sun will be able to:

• Offer a broad range of products including servers, storage, networking, and software

• Integrate all the components-hardware, operating system, database, middleware, and applications-for unmatched performance, reliability, and security

• Simplify IT management and reduce system deployment and integration costs

• Continue to drive innovation in SPARC, Solaris, the Java platform, and many other technologies
