Attracting top tech talent can be a challenge, especially at a time when competition is fierce for a limited supply of qualified applicants. Here are five tactics that can be effective.

Hold Contests
Prospective employees often appreciate a fun challenge, and many companies have held contests of various sorts to engage job seekers. Game dynamics work for reality television, and they work for real companies too. The trick is coming up with a puzzle that attracts the right people. The UK's GCHQ, like Bletchley Park before it, held a code-breaking contest involving JavaScript in 2011. The only problem was it turned out to be solvable with a Google search.

Successful IT hiring also requires measures to address their attraction and retention issues such as bonuses, and providing additional education and training. Many employers are having success with a comprehensive a program that includes increasing base pay rates, offering retention bonuses while giving workers more training and advancement opportunities. 

When it comes to IT staffing, I think it's more of a skills gap. Our colleges and universities are not graduating enough U.S. citizens with strong science degrees, computer science or otherwise. As a result, firms are struggling to hire full-time or contract staff for IT and engineering positions. In working with Houston IT recruiters, it's important to know their true professional goals. Help them achieve their growth goals and help them establish a career growth path.
