Sun Bolsters Enterprise App Strategy With Forté Acquisition
Looking to strengthen its enterprise application development and integration tools offerings, Sun Microsystems is acquiring Forté Software Inc. in a stock swap valued at about $540 million. Sun expects to complete the acquisition sometime during its second fiscal quarter ending Dec. 31, 1999.
Sun is particularly interested in Forte's SynerJ Java development tools, the object-oriented Forté Application Environment toolset, and the vendor's Fusion enterprise application integration technology, according to Ed Zander, Sun's president and chief operating officer.
Zander says that "providing a set of world-class development tools to build network-aware applications" is a cornerstone of the vendor's software strategy. But Zander and other Sun executives said it was too soon to provide details about how Forté 's technology would be integrated with Sun's existing development offerings.
Forté will continue to operate under its own name as a Sun subsidiary in its software products and platforms division. Zander and Forté CEO and president Marty Sprinzen said there are no plans for layoffs, and Forté will remain in its Oakland, Calif., headquarters.
