Sybase Outlines New E-Business Directions



All but defeated in its battle against database rival Oracle, Sybase continues to refashion itself as a business-intelligence vendor. At its TechWave 2000 user conference this week, Sybase will unveil a raft of E-business initiatives.

Sybase, with a miniscule 3% market share in databases, has spent the last year creating an enterprise portal system, mobile-computing software, and business-intelligence applications for vertical markets, among other products.

"Two years ago, Sybase made a pretty high-risk decision to transform itself into a portal company," says Tom Koulopolous, president of the Delphi Group. Koulopolous says that the company is enjoying financial and strategic success. Sybase this week is expected to do the following:

  • Announce the general availability of Enterprise ApplicationServer 3.6, offering--for the first time--full support of Java 2 Enterprise Edition. Pricing is expected to begin at $2,995.

  • Debut a beta version of the PowerBuilder 8.0 development toolset that includes Web-development features. Execs likely will formally commit to a version 9, as well.

  • Introduce a line of E-business products for customer-acquisition and -retention programs for telcos. The suite will include Sybase's data warehousing and portal technology combined with industry-specific business-intelligence and analytical customer-relationship management applications.
