'Technology Isn't Enough'

Sam Palmisano

Sam Palmisano
IBM chairman and CEO Sam Palmisano told business customers in San Francisco last week that efforts to deliver computing power "on demand" over the Internet will depend on companies' adoption of industry standards such as Linux, Java, and grid computing. "Technology unto itself is not enough," he said. "The differentiation will be integration of technology into business." Other observations offered at the event at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art: John Chambers, president and CEO of Cisco Systems, said alliances among tech companies will determine winners and losers in the next decade more than acquisitions. "It's going to generate a lot of revenue you wouldn't get otherwise," Chambers said. General Electric Co. chairman and CEO Jeff Immelt said the $130.7 billion-a-year company has had better luck developing technology with universities than with startups. "You don't have to argue about who's going to sell it." IBM senior VP Bill Zeitler said in an interview that the company has about 100 customers buying grid-computing technology, but it's "kind of early" to count meaningful revenue from selling time on a grid.
