Tivoli Systems Inc. this week will disclose plans to integrate IBM's single sign-on technology into its Tivoli Security product suite. The goal is to give IT managers centralized password management and let users access multiple applications using a single password, thereby reducing support costs, boosting productivity, and increasing security.
"CEOs and other managers don't understand why they have to have so many passwords," says Robb Dongoski, manager of national enterprise systems management services for Ernst & Young. But convenience and price aren't their only concerns. The 1998 Ernst & Young Information Security Survey showed 62% of respondents ranked multiple logons and passwords as a top security concern, since users often write them down and post them on their computers.
Tivoli Global Sign-On will prompt users for their logon information when they boot up their computers, then use it to gather other logons and passwords from a secured database using 56-bit data encryption. Tivoli Global Sign-On, available now, starts at $2,000 per server and $75 per client.
