Unisys Corp. will unveil two servers today, signaling itsreturn to the system market after focusing on services forprofitability. Once a leading competitor to IBM for systemsthat run airlines and banks, the 1990s became a decade ofretreat for Unisys. With the Aquanta ES5085 and ClearPathHMP IX6800 servers, the one-time giant is back on the serverbattlefield.
The Aquanta ES5085 is equipped with eight 500-MHz IntelPentium III Xeon processors for a performance improvement of2.5 times its QS/2 server predecessor. It also comes withUnisys Enterprise Server Software release 1.1, which letscustomers simultaneously partition servers by assigningprocessors to separate tasks. The ES5085 will be availableby summer at prices yet to be determined.
The ClearPath HMP IX6800 will give customers a single serverto run legacy systems and NT-based applications. When itships this summer, it will be 60% more powerful than thenext most-powerful ClearPath server, but it will cost only$3,000 per million instructions per second, compared with$8,000 before.
