UUnet Combines Remote Access Services
UUnet, a WorldCom company, plans to combine its corporate digital subscriber line, dial-up, and mobile wireless communications into one package for remote and mobile professionals.
By combining all three services, UUnet says it will simplify the task of ensuring network access for an increasing number of mobile workers. UUnet's Access Choice service will include a broadband mobile wireless service that runs on Metricom Inc.'s Ricochet wireless infrastructure, broadband DSL, and its business-class dial-up service.
UUnet customers will be able to manage any or all of the three services from one account. Systems administrators will have access to Enterprise Service Management, an Internet-based application that lets the systems administrator set up accounts for all of a corporation's remote or mobile workers, based on the services that are available in the area.
Access Choice services will be offered on a monthly and per-user subscription basis. UUnet dial-up and mobile service is available in Atlanta and San Diego and is expected to expand to 46 cities by the middle of next year. UUnet's DSL service is expected to be available by the end of the year.
