VA Linux Revenue Soars, Expenses Rise

VA Linux Systems Inc. on Tuesday reported a sevenfold revenue increase for its third quarter, ended April 28, but rising expansion-related expenses contributed to a larger net loss for the quarter as well.

VA Linux (stock: LNUX, which configures and sells servers and workstations running the open-source Linux operating system, says revenue increased 710% to $34.6 million, compared with $4.3 million a year ago. But the company reported a net loss of $20.6 million, compared with a loss of $3.4 million last year. Operating expenses soared to $28.8 million, vs. $3.4 million during the third quarter of 1999. President and CEO Larry Augustin says the company's gross margins are improving, and it's making "progress toward profitability." VA Linux acquired TruSolutions Inc., which makes entry-level servers, and storage vendor Net Attach Inc. VA Linux expects its pending acquisition of open-source news site to close by mid-June.
