VPN Offerings To Be Unveiled

An array of virtual private network products will be unveiled this week, making it cheaper to deploy VPN services that provide remote workers with faster, more secure access to company networks. IPass Access will roll out at Washington's ComNet show one of the first flat-rate VPN services. The service, priced at $19.95 a month, will provide users 100 hours of network time via local calls into 450 network access points around the country. Assured Digital Inc., also this week at ComNet, will ship its ADI 1500 VPN switch, designed to let companies use tunneling over the Internet to support as many as 32 simultaneous users. It sells for $2,195.

Cisco Systems last week laid out its enterprise VPN strategy with an emphasis on managing scalable, secure platforms. Cisco will add integrated hardware-based IPSec encryption and IP compression to its Cisco 7500 and 7200 routers by midyear. With processors dedicated to encryption, the routers can offer encryption to more users. Cisco is adding firewall extensions to the 7200 and is boosting management capabilities.

Other vendors are focused on providing VPN gear that will let carriers provide their customers with cheaper, larger VPNs. VPNet Technologies Inc. this week will unveil the VSU- 1100 VPNware Service Unit, an IPSec-compliant device that will let carriers handle up to 5,000 simultaneous users at about $12 a user. Newbridge Networks Corp. will unveil Newbridge MainStreet Xpress 36100 Access Concentrator, letting carriers offer IP VPNs mapped to ATM. Carriers will be able to manage VPNs from the Newbridge switch rather than having to program each router in a network.
