Wanted: Standards For Remote-monitoring Devices

CommerceNet, a nonprofit group that promotes global electronic trading, is trying to get the health-care industry to make better use of the Web and network services. The group's HealthConnect program has a working group of health-industry leaders that's exploring channels and methods that would allow medical devices to securely connect to the Internet to give doctors remote access to patient data, such as blood-pressure and sugar readings, heart or lung functioning, and fetal monitoring.

"There are a handful of devices that can get this information back to the doctor over the Internet," CommerceNet CEO Kevin Surace says. "But the problem is that there isn't a consistent way for the physicians to look at the data, so insurance companies won't pay."

HealthConnect is working to rally support from device makers and health plans for standards-based open service, Surace says, noting that early-stage initiatives are likely to kick off this fall.
