Whitepaper: Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID): Drivers, Challenges and Public Policy Considerations

by OECDJan 01, 2008

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is one of several automatic identification sensor-based technologies consisting of three key elements: RFID tags; RFID readers (transceivers); and a data collection, distribution, and management system that has the ability to identify or scan information with increased speed and accuracy. RFID touches on several regulatory and/or policy issues highlighted in this paper. These include international trade, intellectual property rights, standards, spectrum, security, and privacy. RFID’s benefits and potential pitfalls should be considered within the wider context of its impact on economies and society.
