The U.S. Small Business Administration and Dell Computer have launched a Web site with information and services intended to make small businesses more aware of the year 2000 computer date-field problem. The site includes software tools and case studies to help small businesses understand the problem.
Dell's involvement stems in part from its dealings with thousands of small business customers who said the year 2000 issue was one of their top concerns.
Nearly one-quarter of all businesses--of which some 80% are small companies--have not begun to prepare their systems for the new millennium, according to a Gartner Group study. Their noncompliance could affect their suppliers, partners, and customers, adds Kazim Isfahani, an analyst with Giga Information Group.
The SBA-Dell site can be accessed at either www.dell.com/smallbiz/y2k or www.sba.gov/y2k/. The information is also available in paper form at all regional and district SBA offices.
