Sun Microsystems has launched Compliance and Content Management Solution, a technology offering that addresses a need for instantly locating documents relevant in regulatory and legal-discovery proceedings. The product combines servers, storage, and operating software from Sun with E-mail and instant-messaging archiving software from Axs-One Inc.

Companies spent $180 million last year on E-mail and IM archiving systems, according to research firm IDC. That's expected to grow by 50% a year through 2008, driven in large part by the need to comply with regulations such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, as well as narrower, industry-specific regulations.

Ed Valdez, Sun's VP of integrated solutions, says the Sun product competes directly with products offered by storage-management vendors such as EMC Corp.'s Documentum systems.
