I spoke with a CIO recently who said that he can find point-product experts -- experts in particular data tools -- but the really hard and valuable people are those who understand the broader data architecture, the full picture of what you're trying to do and how to make it happen. I also hear this point often about software engineers -- the demand is high for just hard core software engineering chops.

Resume buzzword bingo
Note the advice about not overloading your resume with buzzwords you can't support. This is a balance: You want to get past the software that is weeding out resumes, but you don't want to play buzzword bingo. I also find bios that overdose on buzzwords unappealing. Ever notice all those snarky Twitter comments about Ninjas/rockstars/thought leaders?
