re: 2 Storage Management Trends To Watch In 2012
While storage management issues are definitely a common area of concern, what I've seen most frequently as an impediment to virtualization projects (and analyst studies bear this out) is reluctance to virtualize that last 20 or 30 percent of apps that are considered too mission critical (or politically sensitive) to virtualize. The big problem associated with storage management is the explosion in storage requirements that pervasive virtualization entails, and the ease with which system administrators can generate new VM images. I'm by no means trivializing storage management as a major issue, but I don't see it holding up major virtualization initiatives. In fact, we've developed solutions specifically targeting application availability and storage management for virtualized environments.

The consolidated compute and storage (converged infrastructure) solutions you mention are getting a lot of attention these days, but probably more than they deserve. While providing some benefits in accelerating deployment, the penalties paid later in lack of flexibility and vendor lock-in don't really seem to be worth it. It remains to be seen how receptive IT shops will be to converged infrastructure, but right now I see them benefitting the hardware vendors more than their customers.

We're seeing new titles in this digital revolution, new responsibilities, new business models, and major shifts in technology spending.
