re: VMware, EMC Shakeup Hints At Data Center's Future
There is huge and growing competition in the big customer accounts. None of the major players has really gone after the SMB market with the zeal they have for landing the big ones. But that time will come because the revenue potential is huge in SMB. Look at CriKit, Desktop Private Cloud and you will be looking at the future http://www.crikit.info Compact, powerful compute nodes integrated with networking and storage to support some number of virtual machines and hundreds to thousands of users, while drawing less than 1,000 watts, and integrated on the back-end with public cloud providers. THAT is the on-prem SMB future they are all working towards, but there are many roadblocks to that future. Mainly, it is very cheap from a hardware perspective and there is free, Open Source software to cut costs further. Expensive hardware and software combinations will be a hard sell to people with smaller IT shops and tight budgets.

Great analysis (no surprise there). The software defined data center has become the central EMC theme, now they just have to make it happen. So does Microsoft, Cisco, et al btw
